Got Some Questions?

What is the difference between Copper & Fibre Broadband?

Fibre to the Home (FTTH) is an access network method that delivers the highest possible speed of internet connection by using optical fibre that runs directly into the home, building or office. The SIRO network is built using the ESB’s overhead and underground infrastructure, ensuring a fast, reliable and sustainable network.

Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) versus Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH). In an FTTC connection, copper is used for the last piece of the connection (from tens to hundreds of meters) connecting the telephone exchange cabinet on the street and the router in your house. All the speed-of-light goodness of fibre optics is lost during this last stretch, and that’s why FTTC delivers speeds of no more that 100Mbps.

On the other hand, SIRO FTTH network connects 100% fibre optic cables all the way to your home, delivering speeds up to 2000Mbps (2Gb). Fibre is faster, more reliable, and superior to copper in many ways, as it removes all the bottlenecks commonly seen in a copper network. You can connect as many devices as you like, play HD games, watch Netflix and download movies without slowing down your connection.

How do I know if I'm on Copper Broadband?

The quickest way is to contact your current broadband retail provider, or while not specifically for copper broadband, you can also perform a speed test to check your current download speed. If your speed is lower than expected it might indicate that you’re on copper broadband network.

What does 99.99% Reliability Mean?

The SIRO 100% fibre network, provides homes across Ireland 99.99% uptime. The time that the internet service is available to the end customer in relation to the total time of the measurement period. Service levels are reported on a monthly basis.

What is the Copper Switch-Off?

Copper switch-off refers to the planned discontinuation of the traditional copper broadband network. Copper is being switched off because it simply can’t meet the demands, of more bandwidth, higher speeds and greater data needs, now placed upon it. The transition will mean that homes and businesses will move to a full fibre network which is faster, more reliable and future proofed for decades to come – full fibre broadband.

Why Does the Copper Switch-Off Matter?

It matters because the days of copper broadband are numbered. Ireland’s telecoms regulator, Comreg, has approved the commencement of the copper switch off process. Separately, the European Commission wants all copper broadband to be switched off across the EU by no later than 2030.

Not only will copper broadband be phased out but a wide range of devices currently dependent on copper will need to be upgraded to be compatible with modern broadband.  These include many everyday home and business devices, such as landline phones, house and fire alarms, medical and security monitors, lifts, retail sales terminals or CCTV systems.

When will the Copper Switch-Off Happen?

The European Commission has proposed 2030 as the deadline for this transition across the EU, meaning Ireland must also meet this target. It is time to prepare for this change now, to keep everything running smoothly and jump into the fast lane of fibre broadband.

How is SIRO installed?

When you purchase SIRO from a broadband provider, an engineer will visit your business at a time agreed by you and will work with the business to determine the entry point for the fibre. Where applicable the existing communications space will be utilised and a time agreed that works for your business.

How does the consumer get connected?

When a consumer wishes to be connected, an appointment will be booked for the connection to be installed. The installer will then make contact with the resident to arrange a date and a time for the connection to take place. When the installer arrives on site, he/she will take time to discuss the installation process with the resident and agree the most suitable entry point and route for the cable inside the apartment. The installer will then locate the pre-installed connection box and connect a fibre optic cable to the connector located within.

Does the network interfere with any other service on site?

No. The fibre broadband service is installed completely independently of all other existing services on a property.

Who pays for the fibre-optic network install?

SIRO covers the cost of the installation of the system and all associated works. There is no cost to the residents or the management company.

How much does SIRO cost?

As an open access wholesaler, SIRO is responsible for building the 100% fibre first network and makes it available to broadband providers to sell to the public/end user. Our retail providers offer a range of different products and speeds to homes and businesses at different price points. Why is SIRO different?

SIRO’s key innovation is that it is a 100% fibre-optic internet connection all the way to the building (fibre-to-the-building), making it a vast improvement on any other broadband infrastructure currently available in Ireland, with no copper connection at any point in the network. SIRO is Fibre-to-the-building which means you’ll have incredible speed and reliability instantly.

How is SIRO installed?

When you purchase SIRO from a broadband provider, an engineer will visit your home at a time agreed by you to complete the fibre first installation. SIRO will be brought into your home either overhead or underground and into the ESB meter box. An external connector box which houses the SIRO fibre will be positioned close to the ESB meter box.

The engineer will agree with you where to install our internal connector box. Some minor drilling is involved and some cabling depending on where you would like your modem. The engineer will ensure and prove that your home is receiving the fibre first speed based on the package purchased.

For SME and Enterprise customers, an engineer will work with the business to determine the entry point. Where applicable the existing communications space will be utilised.

Do I require a phone line to purchase SIRO?

No, a phone line is not required to avail of SIRO broadband. The SIRO network will be brought into your home or business using the existing ESB infrastructure when possible.

What is SIRO?

SIRO is a joint venture company between the ESB and Vodafone. We are building a 100% fibre-to-the-premise broadband network using the existing ESB infrastructure.  Launched in 2015, SIRO is Ireland’s first 100% Fibre First wholesale network and offer speeds of up to 2 Gigabit, the fastest speeds available on the market.

Why choose SIRO?

Reliability SIRO’s 100% fibre-to-the-premise network is delivered using ESB existing infrastructure, with no copper connection at any point in the network. For example, the signal on a copper wire drops massively over just two kilometres, whereas fibre-optic cable over the same distance is extremely reliable.

Gigabit Speed: SIRO’s 100% fibre first broadband offers speeds of 1 Gigabit per second, while a copper-based network generally delivers speeds of up to 100 Megabits per second. A 25GB HD movie would take 3 minutes to download on a FTTH 1Gbps connection, but more than 30 minutes on a FTTC 100Mbps connection.

Multiple Devices: Our homes are full of devices as we continue to work remotely – multiple laptops, tablets, consoles and mobiles are usually connected to the internet at once. With SIRO 100% fibre first broadband, you can connect as many devices to your broadband as you like and not slow down your connection.

Future Proof: Unlike copper network, fibre-optic cables are extremely resilient to heat, humidity and extreme weather conditions, making this the last broadband connection you’ll ever need. Our Gigabit network is capable of supporting much faster speeds in the future, enabling homes and businesses to cater to evolving technologies and meet future data needs.

Why did ESB & Vodafone get involved?

SIRO was launched in 2015 with our shareholders ESB and Vodafone committing €450m to connect the first 50 towns.  The two shareholders have complementary skill sets. ESB was a pioneer in electrifying Ireland and have unparalleled knowledge of large-scale engineering projects. Vodafone is Ireland’s leading mobile telecoms operator, with over a million customers and world-leading expertise in the transmission of data. These two companies enable SIRO to build a regional 100% fibre-to-the-building network, the first of its kind in Ireland. In 2021, we have received further investment of €620m into the expansion of our network to 770k homes and businesses across 154 towns.

What towns are you rolling out to?

SIRO’s footprint already spans across 26 counties and extends to over 590,000 homes and businesses. We now plan to extend our network to cover 154 towns bringing our total coverage to 770,000 premises. While a full list of our new towns is not yet available, we recommend signing up for our monthly updates at siro.ie/register-your-interest to be kept up to date with our rollout plans.
