SIRO Wins European Fibre Broadband Operator Of The Year 2025
SIRO, a leading Irish fibre to the home (FTTH) broadband operator, has won the European Fibre Broadband Operator of the Year 2025.
The Award, which is awarded by the Fibre to the Home Council of Europe, recognises companies who have made a significant contribution to the development of full fibre broadband connectivity across Europe.
Previous winners of the Award have included Germany’s Deutsche Telecom and Italy’s Open Fibre.
SIRO was founded in 2015, as a commercial joint venture between ESB and Vodafone. Its objective is to bring fibre-to-the-home broadband to communities across Ireland, ensuring Ireland’s connectivity is on a par with the world’s most digitally advanced economies.
To date, SIRO’s network is available to almost 650,000 homes and businesses in all Irish cities and over 140 towns in every county in Ireland. SIRO continues to roll-out its network and is on track to reach more than 700,000 premises by 2026.
The Award acknowledges the key role that SIRO has played in transforming connectivity in Ireland. From a position, less than a decade ago, where fibre to the premises broadband was effectively non-existent in Ireland, to a position where now two-thirds of all premises can access a full fibre broadband connection. The Government has set a target of Gigabit connectivity for all by 2028, and SIRO is playing its part to support this objective.
FTTH Council of Europe President Rosheen McCool stated:
“SIRO’s achievements in expanding full fibre broadband in Ireland are a significant contribution to the country’s digital transformation. The FTTH Council of Europe recognises the role operators like SIRO play in advancing fibre connectivity across Europe. The growth of fibre networks in Ireland, which is now on track to meet national connectivity goals, is a positive step towards ensuring all Europeans have access to high-quality broadband”, added Ms. McCool.
Speaking at the FTTH Council Award presentation event in Amsterdam, SIRO CEO John Keaney noted that:
“Access to high quality fibre-to-the-home broadband is changing every aspect of how we now live and work. From working from home or in digital hubs in regional areas outside of our overstretched cities; accessing online learning or public services; to A.I. transforming how business operates, increasing digitalisation is touching all our lives. In SIRO, a company rolling out the broadband network underpinning this transformation, we are motivated each day to ensure communities across Ireland can benefit from the opportunities to live and work in better, more sustainable ways. Ireland can point to significant progress over the last decade. We have jumped from one of the lowest levels of Fibre to the Home broadband in the EU, to a position where we are rapidly catching up with Europe’s top performers. So much so, that the process of copper switch off in Ireland is expected to commence shortly.
I am really pleased to accept this Award on behalf of all SIRO colleagues, our parents ESB and Vodafone, and our many partners who have all contributed to SIRO’s success to date. This Award speaks both to what is possible from teamwork and a shared vision to provide Ireland with world leading connectivity, and to the future potential of that connectivity to further enhance and develop Ireland’s economy and society for the benefit of all,” added Mr. Keaney.
